The use of case studies in entrepreneurship education

Abstract

This chapter provides an academic overview of teaching entrepreneurship through the use of case studies. It discusses from an academic perspective the nature of case studies, and the benefits that they offer to educators and students. The chapter also explores how educators might utilise these resources within their teaching activities and how students should learn through case studies. How educators select case studies for use in the classroom and then facilitate student learning are also examined to provide the reader with a strong understanding of the most effective learning mechanisms. To encourage people to engage in writing their own cases for examination, the chapter provides a detailed approach to writing case studies and a structured methodology that they could adopt as new creators of these tools. Overall, the chapter offers an overview of teaching through case studies that sets the context for the employment of the examples published in the book.
