'The Minister Requests The Pleasure': Irish State Hospitality, 1922-1963

Research output: Book/ReportBookpeer-review

Abstract

This monograph was commissioned by Peter Lang (Oxford) for inclusion in the Reimagining Ireland series. It develops my doctoral research into the first scholarly study of Irish diplomatic protocols for state hospitality offered by Irish Ministers for External Affairs from the foundation of the Irish Free State in 1922 to the state visit of President John F. Kennedy in 1963.

The canonical texts of Irish diplomacy have, to date, paid no attention to the role of food, dining, or protocols for state hospitality. This monograph addresses that lacuna combining diplomatic history, food history, Irish political history, and food and beverage studies.
