Abstract
The Golden Thread: Irish Women Playwrights, 1716–2016, the two-volume essay collection recently published by Liverpool University Press, grew out of a conference held at Mary Immaculate College (MIC) in Limerick in June 2017. 1 That event was an academic response to the# WakingTheFeminists campaign for greater gender equity in Irish theater. As readers will be aware,# Waking TheFeminists (# WTF) grew out of the frustration many felt upon hearing the Abbey Theatre’s October 2015 announcement of its forthcoming “Waking the Nation” theater season—a series of plays intended to mark the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising. Only one of the ten plays included in that program was written by a woman, highlighting the continued marginalization of women playwrights within Irish theater.
