Abstract
In this study nickel (Ni) and iron (Fe) co-deposition was performed on Al to produce Al@Ni-Fe core-shell energetic powders using electroless deposition. Energy released from Al@Ni-Fe powders in oxidizing environment was investigated to characterize their potential as energetic materials in comparison with Al. Five types of bath compositions were used to synthesize Al@Ni-Fe powder with different ratio of Ni and Fe in co-deposited coating. Structure, morphology and thermal properties of synthesized powders were characterized using different techniques. Results exhibited that Al@Ni-Fe core-shell powder with high Fe content (Fe:Ni = 75:25) have high enthalpy of combustion that is 2.2 times more of pure Al powder.
