Abstract

The enhancement of fault-ride through (FRT) capability of a Fixed Speed Induction Generator (FSIG) with the help of a Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) and STATCOM are examined in this paper. The FRT performance of these equipments are evaluated and compared in accordance with Irish Grid Code requirement. A simulation study carried out on a 2 MW wind turbine with varying power system parameters has shown that the application of a STATCOM can be economical for a stronger networks where as a UPQC seems to be the economical option when the FSIG is connected to a weaker network.
