Abstract

This work in progress paper presents the development of SPIED, a Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence pedagogy for teaching AI at upper second level. The AI education literature for K-12 shows there is a need for pedagogies to cover both the technical and ethical elements of AI. SPIED combines an explicit ethical focus and the technical skills required for working with AI. SPIED was developed from three distinct foundations; PRIMM as an approach to teaching programming, the HCAI Block model, and critical pedagogy as a learning theory. This paper then presents the iterative development of SPIED as a pedagogy via corroboration using the HCAI Block model and the process of face validation. Future work will involve a study to validate SPIED as a pedagogy which will be aided by the development of supportive activities.
