Abstract
We present the results of our studies of whispering gallery modes excited in a cylindrical microresonator formed by a short length of plastic fiber with a diameter of 490 μm. The light coupling to the micro cylinder was achieved by a full silica fiber taper placed in close physical contact with the fiber micro-cylinder. Narrow whispering gallery mode resonances are observed in the transmission spectrum of the fiber taper at the perpendicular position with a maximum Q factor of ~2.7 × 105. By monitoring the whispering gallery mode resonances one can determine the variation in the fiber effective diameter and/or variations in the surrounding refractive index with high accuracy. The experimental results are compared with those achieved for a similar multimode silica fiber resonator with a diameter of 240 μm.
