Abstract

Optical fibers have revolutionized communications industry and since the early 1970s have become the communications medium of choice for telephones, Internet, cable television, security cameras, utility, and industrial networks. Enormous information transmission capacity of the optical fibers combined with additional advantages, such as low losses, immunity to electromagnetic interference, small size, lightweight, and electrical insulation, makes them the most effective means for transporting information. Applications of optical fibers extend well beyond communications industry and their number continues to grow. For example, due to fibers’ ability to deliver light to confined spaces, optical fibers are used in medicine for viewing internal body parts. Other examples include applications for illumination, in fiber lasers, and in sensing.
