Abstract
In this chapter, I reflect on the evolution of computational social science (CSS), from its roots in agent-based modeling and simulations to the current focus on big data analysis and digitally mediated experiments. My aim in curating this Handbook and writing this chapter was not to define CSS but to showcase its fluid boundaries and dynamic possibilities. Designed primarily for undergraduate students, the Handbook also offers value to graduate students and researchers at all levels. Editing this Handbook was an intimate process of collaboration and connection, allowing me to learn from both the chapters and the contributors. As CSS enters a new phase, shaped by generative AI and large language models, I hope this Handbook serves as a valuable resource for exploring the field’s potential without forgetting its roots.
