N2 - In tidal turbine engineering it is common place to use the theory of wind energy engineering in the modeling of turbines. This paper identifies the common design principles in the field, addresses the pitfalls of adopting this theory, and attempts to identify other modeling techniques that might add to the knowledge base used in preparing power production estimates. A methodology for modeling different turbine designs is postulated. In tidal turbine engineering it is common place to use the theory of wind energy engineering in the modeling of turbines.
