Abstract

Numerous masonry structures require repair or retrofitting due to ageing or extreme events like earthquakes. With the emergence of modern strengthening methods, researchers have been actively seeking innovative solutions to enhance the longevity of masonry structures while maintaining structural safety and preserving heritage value. In this context, composite reinforced mortar (CRM) systems have been utilized as externally bonded reinforcement for masonry members, showing promising enhancements in load-carrying and deformation capacities. Presently, this technology is highly regarded in the realm of structural repairing and strengthening of masonry structures. However, as CRM systems are still in their early stages, limited research exists regarding their mechanical properties and interaction with masonry substrates. The present paper aims to investigate the tensile properties of bare yarns and grids in both the warp and weft directions. Moreover, diagonal compression tests were conducted to study the behavior of unreinforced masonry wallets and investigate the effect of strengthening on the performance of such wallets. These tests are intended to offer a comprehensive mechanical characterization of CRM, enabling the enhanced design of strengthening applications utilizing this system.
