Abstract
As part of the “Jeudis de la guitare” series and the Festival l’Odyssée Frank Martin, Marco Ramelli will perform a newly revised version of Quatre pièces brèves, Frank Martin’s only work for solo guitar.
In Ramelli's approach, Quatre pièces brèves are not only considered as a concert piece but also as tools for exploring and developing the perception of rhythm, movement, harmony, tactile awareness, and improvisation, in alignment with Dalcroze’s principles. Martin, in addition to being a teacher of improvisation at the Dalcroze institute, was a student of Dalcroze and incorporated many of his theories into his compositions.
Like Dalcroze, Martin demonstrated a profound interest in the performance practices of great Romantic pianists, focusing particularly on the perception of time and its connection to the sense of touch and movemnt. In the introduction to the concert it will be also examines how the notation of Quatre pièces brèves can be interpreted in light of Romantic performance practice, as explored by scholars such as Clive Brown.
The aim is not to propose a new edition but to highlight how existing editions can support a freer and more creative interpretative approach, in harmony with the composer’s vision.
