Abstract
The energy sources and supply in South Africa comprise coal, crude oil, gas, nuclear, geothermal and renewables from domestic production and imported sources. South Africa’s energy sector is at the center of the economy due to its high density of energy resources. Recently, the government has begun to increase energy production from renewable sources, such as wind and solar, and research is underway from other viable sources, such as waves and biofuels. Under India’s G20 presidency, several priorities have been set to develop global cooperation and strengthen the energy transition. This chapter examines the different energy sectors and consumption in the current scenario of South Africa. In addition, key trends for sustainable energy security have been projected with a progressive roadmap of sustainable energy in South Africa. The G20 India presidency has pushed objectives to provide financial stability with a focus on climate change and sustainable development issues for sustainable energy security. Therefore, low-cost financing for the energy transition, addressing technological gaps regarding energy transition, efficient industrial energy production through maintenance of low carbon transitions and responsible consumption can develop sustainable energy security in South Africa.
