Abstract
The period of 1990−2020 saw a wave of economic, social, and political changes that fundamentally affected the national context of the Republic of Ireland. This chapter explores how these historic developments—including the Celtic Tiger and subsequent economic crash, liberal shifts in national politics, and diversifying population demographics—have been reflected in Irish theatre. Traversing some of the most iconic performative movements and moments, and offering an overview of the industry, ecology, and cultures of Irish theatre-making, this chapter offers an informative portrait of Irish theatre in the early twenty-first century.
