Abstract

Smart and intelligent food packaging represents a transformative response to growing global challenges in food safety, waste reduction, and supply chain transparency. Driven by population growth, climate change, and increasing consumer demand for sustainable solutions, modern packaging has evolved beyond its primary function of containment to become a dynamic interface for quality assurance and traceability. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution of food packaging technologies from primitive natural materials to intelligent, IoT-enabled systems. It categorizes smart packaging based on function (monitoring, communication, preservation), explores enabling technologies such as sensors, indicators, nanomaterials, AI, and blockchain, and highlights their application across key food sectors. Drawing on recent literature and commercial developments, the chapter also addresses regulatory frameworks, market trends, and barriers to industrial adoption. By mapping structure-function-benefit relationships, it presents an integrated view of packaging innovation. The chapter concludes that smart packaging is a critical enabler of sustainable, safe, and responsive food systems.
