Abstract

This paper explores the impediments to embracing decentralised renewable energy systems in sub-Saharan Africa. It proposes solutions that focus on the regulatory frameworks and electrification initiatives using case studies of countries. Notwithstanding bountiful renewable energy resources, several sub-Saharan African countries face difficulties incorporating decentralised renewable energy systems into their energy mix due to regulatory intricacies, institutional capacity restrictions, and financial impediments. Focusing on a comparative overview and case studies from Nigeria, Liberia, and Malawi this paper identifies common impediments such as conflicting policy frameworks, insufficient regulatory enforcement, and restricted access to financing for decentralised renewable energy systems plans. This paper also explained successful strategic plans and resolutions that must be put in place to overcome these impediments which include policy reformations directed at improving regulatory clarity and enforcement, innovative financing systems such as crowdfunding and public-private partnerships (PPPs), and capacity-building initiatives to enhance local and technical skills. Therefore, by examining both problems and resolutions, the paper contributes to the ongoing discussion on sustainable energy development in sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, this paper provides valuable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and stakeholders who seek to promote the widespread embracement of decentralised renewable energy systems in the sub-Saharan African region.
