Abstract
Food has not been a feature of Irish diplomatic history. When one examines the seminal survey texts establishing the history of Irish diplomacy, it is apparent that food, dining and protocol have not been given an form of considered analysis.
This article attempts to address this lacuna and aims to add to the existing research on Ireland’s culinary culture by exploring how, on gaining independence following the signature of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1921 and after eight centuries of British rule, the Irish government established a framework for receiving important visitors and guests. Drawing on Irish government archives, the majority of which were those of the Department of External Affairs, many of which had never been consulted previously, this article introduces early Irish state hospitality and focuses in particular on the period between 1932 and 1940 when a change in government brought about a new and distinctive era in Ireland’s nascent diplomatic relations and state entertainment.
