N2 - Starting with a brief overview of the history of the development of optical fiber, the potential applications of fluoride glass fiber for use in low-loss information transmission are described. Considering the intrinsic loss, then with a sufficiently mature fabrication technique, fluoride glass fiber has a minimum ideal loss 10–3 dB/km. Several of the main fabrication techniques for fluoride fibers are presented in detail. Finally, the application fields of fluoride fibers and the main optical devices are presented. Due to its excellent characteristics, fluoride fiber has an important role in the progress of optical systems and devices for a diverse range of current and future applications.
