Factors Contributing to Unemployment for Slums in India

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

    Abstract

Unemployment and poverty are significant barriers to socio-economic development in slum communities, exacerbated by limited access to education, infrastructure, and formal job markets. This study investigates “Tinker,” a digital platform designed to address these issues by offering remote work opportunities and enabling users to sell products online. By connecting marginalised communities with global job markets, Tinker aims to provide flexible, location-independent employment and empower individuals economically. The research combines a literature review, market analysis, and empirical data from interviews and surveys to assess the platform’s potential impact. Findings highlight that Tinker can bridge employment gaps and support economic independence, although challenges such as digital literacy and infrastructure constraints remain. Usability testing reveals that while the platform is generally user-friendly, improvements are needed to enhance accessibility and user support. This study concludes that Tinker offers a promising model for addressing unemployment in underserved communities and fostering sustainable development. Future efforts should focus on expanding digital inclusion and enhancing training resources to maximise the platform's effectiveness and reach.
