Exploring political discourses in the EU Parliament on the use of nuclear weapons: a simulation-based learning experience

Research output: Working paper

Abstract

This study explores how simulation-based learning approaches with university students may enhance their comprehension of global risks. More concretely, it presents a model for a simulation exercise around the issue of political discourses concerning the use of nuclear weapons within the EU Parliament. By replicating EU parliamentary debates, this learning experience aims to raise awareness among students on the existential risks that imply the use of nuclear weapons as well as to help them understand the nuances and dynamics of EU political stances on nuclear deterrence. This simulation was conducted twice, in March and April 2024, with the students of Degree and Master Programs in two universities based in Barcelona. Findings based on the speeches prepared by the students and a debriefing conducted after the simulation suggest that simulation-based learning is an effective method for approaching the multifaceted nature of political decision-making related to nuclear weapons and international risk management. Thus, this study contributes to the broader discourse on political education and the role of experiential learning in addressing global security challenges.
