Abstract

The contemporary world is undergoing profound socio-economic and environmental transformations that necessitate a radical re-evaluation of how we learn, teach, innovate and engage with research. Traditional educational models are increasingly insufficient to address the complexity of the twin transition (i.e., green and digital), in which countries need to identify the most effective strategies to advance the digital and green transformations necessary to support sustainable development. While also responding to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its pillars of environment, society, and economy. This research study offers critical insights into the need to build an actionable framework that supports the development of innovative learning spaces and pedagogies within an Immersive Transdisciplinary Learning framework better attuned to the realities of contemporary society. We propose an innovative approach that integrates immersive technologies, transdisciplinary collaboration, and real-world applications to reshape knowledge exchange processes as the learning loop continues to evolve through the lens of Circular Pedagogy. The framework is grounded in INTEGRA (Immersive and Transdisciplinary Education with Gamified and Real-world Applications) and SHIFT (Smart Hybrid Innovation for Future-ready Learning), with Transdisciplinary (T) Education and Technology being the connectors. Together, these paradigms form INTEGRA-SHIFT, a dynamic educational ecosystem that embeds research activities into teaching and learning, fostering creativity, critical thinking, co-creation and innovation while enabling research-informed learning. By blending gamification, experiential learning, hybrid delivery, and immersive technologies, the framework enables learners to engage with complex global challenges through participatory and practice-oriented approaches. Central to the creation of the innovative learning ecosystem, we identify the adoption of Circular Pedagogy, a pioneering concept introduced by researchers at ELaRA Research Group at the European University of Technology (EUt+) in 2022, an emerging model that connects teaching, learning, and research in a continuous cycle of transformation and that has evolved to integrate innovation as a critical pillar. This pedagogy emphasises inclusivity, co-design, adaptability, and cultural resilience, ensuring relevance in a global landscape increasingly shaped by uncertainty, conflict, and disruption. An additional framework for new literacy (metaliteracy) addresses the need to revisit literacy in the context of global digital participatory culture to promote digital citizenship in a world where most content is produced in digital formats. The proposed framework aims to develop future-ready competencies and foster innovation for a disruptive, integrated educational model that aligns with global societal needs guided by transdisciplinarity.
