Abstract

This chapter is crucial for educators and administrators in higher education institutions interested in the effective integration of Extended Reality (XR) technologies in hospitality and tourism teaching. Facing the challenge of how XR can enrich education by combining theory and practice in higher institutions in the field of hospitality and tourism, THETA Project shows the practical application in creating educational material using XR applied in teaching hospitality and tourism in higher education institutes. The project needed to select XR technologies that aligned with its specific educational objectives and were feasible within its technical and logistical constraints. The right choice was crucial to the success of the project. The XR Technologies Assessment Framework for Education (XR-TAFE) was developed to identify the most suitable XR technologies. This framework was applied at the initial stage to ensure that the selected technologies met the necessary criteria. The project evaluated and selected XR technologies that effectively aligned with educational objectives and technical and logistical constraints. This chapter details how this framework was implemented in the initial stages of the project to ensure informed technology decisions, offering readers strategies to apply this knowledge and adapt it to their own requirements. Using the XR-TAFE allows for an informed selection of XR technologies, without losing the specific objectives and criteria of each project. It is applicable in an initial stage to determine what technology to use in the development of educational content in XR.
