Does AI Mask AI: Computing Learning Centre Support Early Observations

Abstract

This poster presents an overview of the initial phase of rolling out an AI tool (PreSS) to identify students at risk of failing or dropping out of introductory programming courses (CS1) that is being implemented as a tool rather than a study. The Computing Learning Centre in TU Dublin is using this tool to proactively identify students who may need additional support at the early stages of CS1. In practice, this involves using the tool in conjunction with other relevant data such as lecture/lab attendance and assessment performance to date. Previously, PreSS was only a model; this is its first live implementation. In its first year of use, PreSS was implemented for 375 students and identified 88 of them as being at risk of failing or dropping out.
