Abstract
Hospitality professionals are trained to deal with the unexpected… but the death of a guest is something different altogether. In this piece for RTE Brainstorm I discuss the 1934 state banquet for American Minister William McDowell at Dublin Castle, and how his sudden death led the Department of External Affairs to draw up the first official protocols for the repatriation of a foreign envoy while on active duty.
