Abstract

The importance of redefining learning environments is considered within the context of Higher Education and the need to progress beyond degrees. The European Laboratory for Pedagogical Action-Research and Student-Centred Learning (ELaRA Research Group) at the European University of Technology (EUt+) is developing a learning model conceived to address the growing disconnect between traditional higher education and the needs and demands of the global society. The world is facing paramount challenges, as we are currently witnessing rising levels of inequality, conflict, violence, economic imbalances, environmental deterioration, uncertainty, friction, political discontent, and polarisation, driven by exorbitant wealth accumulation and power imbalances. The world is facing multiple, multifaceted challenges, and education can help drive change through collaboration, knowledge exchange, and transferability. This working paper offers insights into the importance of innovative, flexible, agile, and adaptable educational frameworks that embrace knowledge transfer through a human-centric approach supported by an innovative digital badges ecosystem. The existing badge pathway has been designed to equip learners with the transversal, transferable, and future-oriented competencies required to thrive in increasingly digital, interconnected, and sustainability-driven learning and working environments. Each badge builds progressively on core pillars, including digital literacy, sustainability awareness, intercultural competence, civic participation, global citizenship, and collaborative problem-solving. Together, they form a coherent learning ecosystem where students move from foundational understanding to applied practice within immersive learning environments and international virtual communities.
