N2 - This work proposes a design concept to enable beam scanning in implantable medical devices. The principle is based on amplitude and phase shift control at the ports of two annular sector antennas. The sectors include slots and shorting vias for dual-band operation and bandwidth enhancement. Additionally, a rectangular parasitic element is loaded between the sectors to improve the strong mutual-coupling at the lower band. Next, the antenna is placed inside a multi-layered phantom to demonstrate the beam scanning properties for in-body scenarios. Overall, full-wave simulations show a lower band electrical size of k a=0.8 , while the main beam can be scanned across the x z -plane with a maximum realized gain of -4.65 dBi.
