Abstract

A thorough consideration and implementation of risk assessment and human factors knowledge into systems at design stage should return the initial investment in terms of enhanced operational performance. The question is whether the standards and guidelines currently available for the industry are able to provide effective guidance to be practically used in the design process by human factors practitioners, project managers, and/or people in a design team. This paper will introduce the relevance of the issue, provide a review of some of the existing standards and guidelines and present early findings from part of a survey designed to collect information about the current perceived gaps and the areas of potential improvement.
