Abstract
Ireland’s Climate Change Adaptation Strategy emphasizes the need for energy-efficient designs in new and upgraded assets, including wastewater treatment facilities. Adjusting the wastewater treatment level based on the assimilative capacity of the receiving water body offers substantial economic and environmental benefits in nutrient-sensitive water bodies. This study aims to investigate the impact of ambient concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus on the assimilative capacity of River Boyne using a mathematical modeling approach. The study employs MIKE21 FM to simulate the downstream concentrations of Ammonia and Orthophosphate in the River Boyne due to wastewater effluent discharges from the Navan Wastewater Treatment Plant. The modeling results were used to quantify the Absorbed Assimilative Capacity (AAC) to assess the impact of the various levels of background concentrations on the assimilative capacity of the receiving water body. The findings revealed that higher background concentrations result in higher AAC. On the other hand, low ambient concentrations (notional clean approach) result in low AAC. This study provides a better understanding of the assimilative capacity of inland water bodies and contributes to future management and policy decisions for sustainable operation of wastewater treatment plants in Ireland.
