Abstract

Technological universities (TUs) mark a notable change in the Irish higher education landscape and were recently founded by mergers of former Institutes of Technology (IoT). The emergence of these five new Irish universities coincided with the increasing emphasis from policymakers on equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in the Irish higher education sector. This chapter explores how EDI has been integrated into these new universities. It examines distinctive aspects of the TU sector, focusing on features which are particularly relevant to the work of EDI and provides short case studies from the five TUs discussing key challenges and opportunities faced when integrating EDI into overall structures, policies and strategic plans. Finally, it summarises progress to date, outlining some of the challenges and opportunities for EDI in the TU sector into the future.
