Abstract
Decreasing the cost of renewable energy and enhancing the performance of solar cells are some of the greatest energy challenges for the 21st century. Down-shifting has proven to be an important principle to improve the efficiency of solar cells. In this article, after a brief description of the down-shifting process, a review of the most common down-shifting elements and their use in solar cells are presented. To conclude, an overview of patent filing and commercial applications will be given.
