Universal language for academic description and information exchange

    Project Details

    Description

Currently, the exchange of information about training activities between higher education institutions was not automated. A student's transcript after an exchange semester was typically a scanned document or a PDF, which had to be manually re-entered into the home institution's system.

Within universities, students' education was often tracked using Excel workbooks alongside the formal information system, and coursework management was manual. While manual transfers were feasible for occasional exchanges, they became complicated when mobility needed to expand significantly, such as in binational curricula or larger projects like European universities.

Students' paths were frequently constrained by rigid information systems, limiting the ability to manage innovative or unconventional study programs. The manual approach became necessary for modular pathways or customized educational tracks involving geographical mobility.

The growth of student populations led institutions to establish information systems, which, despite their intent, often failed to manage original pathways with flexibility. Additionally, the complexity of managing information did not always comply with GDPR standards.

For transparency towards students, external stakeholders, and quality assurance bodies, it was necessary to clearly express requirements and achievements in line with European standards and guidelines while ensuring GDPR compliance.

Consequently, the systems in place limited student mobility, constrained original courses, fostered reluctance to adapt infrastructure, and maintained a focus on traditional rather than personalized educational paths. This resulted in problems with traceability and real-time monitoring of training activities.

Furthermore, modeling higher education activities on a large scale remained impossible without allowing for flexibility and pedagogical customization. Precise monitoring of training costs was also challenging without structured and comprehensive information.
