Description
This research aims to understand the dynamics of charitable giving within the LGBTQ+ community and the broader Irish population. While research on charity donations is abundant, a notable gap exists concerning LGBTQ+ charities. This study seeks to fill that void by exploring the factors influencing donations to LGBTQ+ causes in Ireland.
The project comprises three key components:
- **Donor Identification:** The first part involves identifying who donates to LGBTQ+ charities and why. Are these donors primarily from the LGBTQ+ community, or do they represent a broader demographic? To answer these questions, surveys are being administered to Outhouse donors and a nationally representative sample of Irish adults. These surveys examine social preferences, pro-social behaviors, and donor characteristics.
- **Lab Experiment:** The second phase employs a lab experiment to explore the causal effects of various factors on donations to charities. It investigates whether social distance from the LGBTQ+ community influences donation likelihood and the effectiveness of moral arguments in increasing donations to LGBTQ+ charities. Both LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ individuals are participating in this experiment.
- **Field Experiments:** The final part uses field experiments to test behavioral nudges and donation strategies in Outhouse's donation campaigns. The research explores whether behavioral insights can increase donations from LGBTQ+ individuals and assesses the effectiveness of targeted donation requests versus universal generic appeals.
The insights gained will inform the design of future LGBTQ+ and other charity campaigns and communications.
