Project Details

Description

The objective of this project is to create a nationally representative database of food consumption for five hundred preschool children aged one to four years in the Republic of Ireland. This database updates 2010-2011 data for this group and complements recent data on school-aged children, teenagers, and adults. The survey is comparable with existing survey data in both Ireland and the UK, including Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The database addresses nutrition and food safety issues relevant to public health policy, food safety risk assessment, and the needs of the food industry. In addition to detailed data on food consumption, the project collects information on food composition, recipes, body weight, lifestyle factors, physical activity, determinants of food choice, and urinary samples.

The project also updates and restructures food composition databases to facilitate future analyses of food ingredients, packaging migrants, residues, contaminants, allergens, bioactives, and microorganisms. Urinary samples are analyzed for salt intake and iodine status, with biofluids stored for future analyses of nutrition and metabolic indicators, food intake markers, and exposure to food chemicals.

Data is analyzed to estimate food and nutrient intakes, compliance with dietary recommendations, micronutrient status, prevalence of overweight and obesity, physical activity patterns, and determinants of food choice and eating behavior. The review aims to understand safe, nutritious, acceptable, and sustainable diets for preschool children.

Findings will be disseminated to relevant stakeholders. The project is conducted by a multidisciplinary research team with strong connections to ongoing research in food and health sciences.
