Exploring Transdisciplinary Education combining Arts & Sciences

Project Details

Description

In the 21st century, education needed recalibration to address complex challenges such as the climate crisis, migration, the shift to clean energy, blockchain technology, and growing inequalities. This project investigated a transdisciplinary approach to equip students with the skills necessary to tackle these multifaceted issues.

Transdisciplinarity involves a context-specific mix of scientific, artistic, and societal knowledge, engaging traditionally excluded actors as equal research partners. Unlike traditional education, focused on disciplinary knowledge transfer, or interdisciplinary education, which connects knowledge, transdisciplinary education emphasizes knowledge creation.

Key innovations included:

- Combining Arts and Sciences

- Employing a participatory approach

- Encouraging the use of imagination

- Exploring potential future scenarios

- Breaking down boundaries between conventional disciplines and different types of universities

This approach aimed to redefine problem-solving and empower students to address 21st-century challenges effectively.
