CS_LINC - Bridging the gap to Formal Computer Science Education

    Project Details

    Description

CS_LINC provided formal Computer Science (CS) curricula through equitable online modules, offering long-term exposure to CS. Teachers delivered modules in various formats: synchronously, asynchronously, virtually, blended, or face-to-face.

The project promoted and increased the capacity for access to the Leaving Certificate Computer Science subject at the second level, addressing a gap in Transition Year (TY) CS curricula identified by the Department of Education and Skills framework. It also supported Youth Reach students and their teachers, providing access to formal CS education for vulnerable youths who otherwise lacked such opportunities.

CS_LINC created an online learning environment for Computer Science with modules based on international best practices, tailored to Irish second-level students. This included automated assessments, allowing students to receive certification upon successful completion.

A suite of teacher supports was provided, including in-person Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and resources, to build capacity and self-efficacy for module delivery. In the second year, CS_LINC fully automated the administration process to enable scalability with minimal human input.

For sustainability, CPD sessions migrated online for ongoing accessibility to current or new teachers. This ensured that after the project's conclusion, CS_LINC continued to support TY and YR students in Computer Science.
