Building new Cyclodextrin-based applications for healthcare by implementing sustainable design principles and upscalable preparation protocols

Description

Cyclodextrins are natural products currently used as excipients in drug formulations. They serve as promising platforms for developing nanomedicines, with new cyclodextrin-based nanomedicines being continuously proposed by the scientific community. Cyclodextrin-based polymers can be easily prepared, often outperforming their corresponding monomers. However, the clinical application of these polymers has not yet been realized, despite their promising features.

The consortium, composed of a multidisciplinary team interested in cyclodextrins and nanomedicines, is taking on the challenge of advancing these polymers toward clinical use. To achieve this goal, the team is applying production standards that comply with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) for medicine development from the design stage through the entire process.

Moreover, the project adopts strategic approaches aligned with EU guidelines in the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. By bringing together this diverse team, the project aims to boost the clinical application of cyclodextrin polymers and enhance the participating researchers' skills, making them transferable to other research areas.
