Professional Information

Dr. Niall Holmes is a Discipline Lead (Structural Engineering) in the School of Transport & Civil Engineering at the Technological University, Dublin. Dr Holmes is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of Engineers Ireland.

Niall’s research is in thermodynamic modelling of cement hydration and concrete durability to improve the performance and environmental impact of cementitious materials.

Niall has secured over €6.7m in research grants from a number of sources including Science Foundation Ireland, Enterprise Ireland and other sources. He has over 100 publications in peer reviewed international journals, conference proceedings, books and technical reports. He has supervised two PhD projects and ten Masters to completion. He is currently supervising three PhD and two Masters students as well as a postdoctoral researcher.

Dr Holmes has been awarded several awards including a Teaching Fellowship, 1st prize in the Clean Tech category, Dublin Research and Innovation showcase and a Finalist for the Sustainable Design and Advanced Research (SDAR) award.

Niall oversees the Schools’ two Level 8 Bachelor of Engineering (BE) programmes in Civil (TU826) and Structural (TU824) Engineering, the Schools full-time and part-time Level 9 Masters programmes (TU213 & TU219) and a Joint Level 8 programme with Nanjing Technological University in China.
