Personal profile

Professional Information

I am Irish representative and co-chair on the ICES Working Group on Biological Effects of Contaminants (WGBEC) and on ICES Study Group on Effects of Contaminants (SGEFF). Through these working groups I developed guidelines on integrated approaches for monitoring and biological effects of contaminants in marine species.

Research Interests

My research interests focus on biological effects of individual and mixtures of contaminants on aquatic species and the toxic effects on ecosystem functioning through a range of trophic and organisation levels. Particular interest is focused on the untangling of natural and anthropogenic stress in the organism which underpins the health of the organism and ecosystem. I am also involved in seafood research and was the Irish lead on an EU Marine Biotech funded project called Blueshell (€1.2m) which seeks to valorise functional foods from shellfish waste (1 PhD). I have also been involved in the supervision of 4 International PhD students under an FP7 European network training programme.I have experience in determining ecosystem functioning and interactions through a range of biological organisation levels (particularly community). Recently my research as focused on the tidal freshwater transitional waters in Ireland and am currently collaborating with University of Hull in relation to developing indices for this.

Recently (2017-2020) I lead the Irish portion of the ERA-net Marine Biotech Blueshell project which focused on the use and valorisation of marine shells for short to the market application in agriculture, horticulture and industry. I am currently involved in two consortiums relate to valorisation of seafood waste and collaborate with BIM on a climate change project which is investigating a decarbonising seafood related activities in the marine environment. I also have a great interest in contaminants in seafood.
