Personal profile

Research Interests

My research interests lie broadly within the field of digital culture and include media archaeology, philosophy of technology and new media, with a particular interest in the past, present and future of the digital/algorithmic image. My original training was in computer science and I hold a B.Sc. and an M.Sc. in this area (my M.Sc. thesis was about artificial intelligence). I subsequently conducted research in computer graphics and gaming technology (including supervision of numerous funded postgraduate research projects) before becoming interested in contemporary art (particularly photography), philosophy and aesthetics. I hold an MA from the National College of Art and Design which explored the application of object-oriented philosophy to photography theory and am currently working towards a PhD on the algorithmic image from the same institution. I sometimes also publish or present on pedagogical issues that arise as a result of my teaching practice. Practicing musician and occasional photographic artist.
