Dr Carmel Gallagher

Bio Carmel Gallagher Qualifications B. Soc. Sc (UCD); M. Sociology (UCD); PhD (NUI Galway) Teaching and Research Career: Carmel retired as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Social Sciences in Technological University Dublin in August 2020 where she taught on the BA Hons in Social Care and on the MA in Child, Family and Community Studies. She is continuing her research interests as Emeritus Research Fellow at TU Dublin. Carmel has a particular research interest in older people in Irish society. Her PhD was a study of the participation of older people in their communities published as The Community Life of Older People in Ireland, 2008. She was a member of the ‘Together Old and Young’ (TOY) consortium, an EU funded action research project on intergenerational learning involving older people and young children in 7 European countries which ran in two phases (2012-2014 and 2016-2018). She is currently an online tutor on a MOOC developed as part of the project: ‘Together Old and Young: an Intergenerational approach’ www.toyproject.net She has been involved in the Socrates café - a forum set up in Clareville day centre, Glasnevin, Dublin in 2011 where older people meet and discuss philosophical questions. The HSE have supported a study to pilot the Socrates café in a number of care/social settings with a view to expanding the concept in the elder care sector. Publications: Gallagher, C.
