Professional Information
I am a Senior Lecturer and researcher at Technological University Dublin and the founder and Director of the Virtual Interaction Research Lab (VIRaL). The lab is a cutting edge mixed reality research and development environment. To date, VIRaL has worked with a number of companies on mixed reality projects: Intel, Guinness Storehouse, Mater Private, Inflight Dublin, BioPharmaChem Skillet. VIRaL has also developed the world’s first Virtual Reality Irish language learning game, GaeltechVR (https://gaeltechvr.ie). As the Director of the lab, I oversee all projects from start to finish, as well as being the main VR/AR/XR designer in the lab. I have experience in applied research and research commercialisation, as well as technology development and deployment, having worked on a number of applied research projects over the years. I previously worked as a Post-Doctoral research fellow on the FastNet (Focus on Social Talk: Network Enabling Technology) project in Trinity College Dublin where I developed novel social signal analysis solutions and methods. I am an experienced professional who has worked across a wide number of domains from speech science to virtual and augmented reality. I have successfully commercialised and licensed my patented applied speech research. Due to my diverse educational and professional experience, I have excellent analytical and problem solving skills that allow me to adapt and quickly read into any problem space. I am familiar with a wide range of technologies (hardware and software), current and emerging. I have lectured extensively on various aspects of creative digital media: audio, video, graphics, programming, content development, game design, interaction design, and mixed reality. Specialties: Data Analysis, Applied Research, Research Commercialisation, Speech Analysis, Non-Verbal Communication, Social Signal Analysis, Lecturing, Project Management, Content Creation, Sound Design, VR/AR/XR design and development, Unity 3D, User Interaction Design, Design Based Research, Ludology and Gameplay, Instructional Design.
