Description

This two-part workshop will examine the role of lettering (in the broadest sense) in the formation, regulation, and communication of identity positions. The sessions will include discussion on the history and practice of typography and lettering, initially through the lens of Irish experience and then widening to consider global perspectives. Language is often central to claims of nationhood and political self-determination. These sessions will examine how such claims are woven into everyday experience through visual culture that is often taken for granted and overlooked. Participants will be encouraged to document lettering and typography in their own surroundings and to present and critique the visual statements that they find.
