What was #WakingTheFeminists? A grassroots campaign calling for equality for women across the Irish theatre sector that ran from November 2015 to November 2016. #WakingTheFeminists comprised women and men who spoke out for equality for women in the theatre in Ireland. They were writers, directors, managers, actors, designers, choreographers, technicians, programmers, producers, artists and audience members.
A small group of volunteers worked with leading arts organisations at the level of policy and governance to make sure gender equality becomes part of our sector’s DNA, something solid and irrefutable, knitted into the fabric of how we make theatre in Ireland.
#WakingTheFeminists encouraged and supported individuals to speak up; to interrogate what stories are told, who gets to tell those stories, who makes those decisions, who is represented, and who has the money.
